  • The Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library is launching a new adult book club called Hooked on Books. The first meeting is on Wednesday, June 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the Civic League Room (315 W. Oak Ave), and advance registration is required by Monday, June 8 at 5 p.m.  Jonesboro Right Now

  • Jonesboro shoppers braved rain Friday afternoon as local stores saw a rush of buyers picking up last-minute holiday items ahead of the long weekend.  Northeast Arkansas News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent rain in Arkansas has not reversed months of drought damage, leaving soybeans and row crops struggling despite wet fields. In Jonesboro, farmers started early irrigation, adding costs and sometimes forcing replanting in low-lying fields.  K8 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lake City Volunteer Fire Department was one of 65 rural departments statewide to receive a wildland fire suppression kit valued at $4,850 from the Arkansas Department of Agriculture, funded by the U.S. Forest Service grant (which provided tools like leaf blowers, backpack pumps, and rakes).   • A Craighead County road will close for a bridge replacement as part of a county project aimed at improving traffic flow. The county says work will begin soon (exact start date to be confirmed) and drivers may need to choose alternate routes.  K8 News

  • Arkansas will have Free Fishing Weekend from noon Friday, June 12 to midnight Sunday, letting residents fish without a license or trout stamp.   • The Arkansas State football program will host seven Butch Jones camps on its ASU campus starting June 7, with Prospect, Future Stars, and Specialist camps + a team shootout scheduled through June 20 for different age groups.  The Fox 104.9
  • Arkansas takes on Texas at the SEC Tournament at the Hoover Met at 3 p.m. today; the game faces overcast, rainy weather + left-hander Dietz will start for Arkansas while right-hander Howard begins for Texas.  Delta Digital News Service
