  • Jonesboro author Van Hawkins won the American Legacy Book Award last month in Los Angeles for his book 'Cries from the Walls: Hell in Arkansas Prisons'—he said he was surprised when his wife informed him of the win. Hawkins, a University of Missouri graduate and former Navy veteran, has written stories on prisoner abuse in the South.  Delta Digital News Service

  • Arkansas State University will announce former Houston athletic director Chris Pezman as its next Director of Intercollegiate Athletics as early as Monday; he will replace Jeff Purinton, who left for a position with Learfield Communications in April.   • On May 31, the Skirmish Gravel Festival in Jonesboro featured over 200 cyclists from 15 states racing 106 miles that ended in a photo finish. Jamie Walden won by a split second + organizers provided family rides, live music, and vendor expos to enhance the event.  K8 News
