  • Lake Frierson State Park will host Bark in the Park on October 11 from 9 a.m. + 3 p.m. as Northeast Arkansas residents join dog hikes, a costume contest and giveaways from local vendors for a fun day with pets.  Northeast Arkansas News
  • University Heights Lions Club Park is nearing completion on an all-inclusive playground upgrade in Jonesboro — crews began construction a month ago and are now finishing new equipment and artificial turf as part of the city’s Master Parks Plan to serve all families.   • Jonesboro will host its first Help Them Stay 5K this Saturday, October 11 at Craighead Forest Park's Pavilion 1 at 8:30 a.m. to raise funds for King's Ranch Ministries— a nonprofit that helps children from traumatic beginnings find loving homes.  Northeast Arkansas News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sixth-grade students at Nettleton STEAM Intermediate turned a classroom assignment into an art project to help shelter animals by partnering with the Northeast Arkansas Humane Society—teachers encouraged the kids to create paintings of cats and dogs that spurred adoptions and raised funds for the shelter.  K8 News
  • Arkansas State University will hold a topping-off ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, on Cherokee St. — marking a milestone in the construction of its 56,000-square-foot College of Veterinary Medicine, which is set to open in fall with an initial cohort of 120 students.  NEA Report
  • Eight Arkansas State University students participated in the inaugural Arkansas Collegiate Civic Leadership Academy hosted by the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute in Jonesboro.   • Arkansas State University and its partners will hold a showcase on Oct. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Judd Hill Farmers’ Market to introduce the new CREST Center—designed to offer training in fields like steel, industrial controls and food science. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders advanced the Prospect and Elizabeth Side Path project as part of a $17.5 million capital improvement plan after engineering proposals were due yesterday—$5 million has been set aside to improve one of three pedestrian connections for safer walkways.  Northeast Arkansas News
  • On Wednesday, the Arkansas Department of Transportation announced winners for the 2025 Transportation Alternatives Program and Recreational Trails Program, awarding about $18.9 million for TAP and $1.8 million for RTP statewide. In Craighead County, Arkansas State University, Bono, Brookland, and Jonesboro received funds for projects that build trails and sidewalks—helping people walk and bike safely.  Jonesboro Right Now
  • A-State received a $47K grant from the Elections Trust Initiative to study election practices in rural and urban areas; Dr. Cameron Wimpy and his team will use the funds to analyze policy effects—aiming to build a permanent rural election administration program—from their research.  Northeast Arkansas News
  • Tiffany Wright, director of the Division of Children and Family Services, ran the first mile of a planned 179-mile challenge on Wednesday morning to honor the 179 children awaiting adoption in the foster system—she will finish the last three miles at Project Zero’s Chasing Zero 5K run on Nov. 1.  Delta Digital News Service
