EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arkansas State University will host a topping off ceremony on Monday, Oct. 13 at 11:00 a.m. on Cherokee St.—a key milestone for the new veterinary program, Arkansas’ first public CVM— as it moves toward a planned fall opening to meet the state’s growing need for veterinarians.  Jonesboro Right Now
  • A-State’s new CREST Center will host a showcase on October 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Judd Hill Farmers’ Market to share details on training programs for steel, food science and advanced manufacturing. Community members can learn how the center will build hands-on skills for local jobs.  K8 News
  • NYITCOM at A-State unveiled a new Little Free Library in front of University Heights Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon as part of a literacy partnership—staff, project donors, and school librarians marked the event and added the library to the Little Free Library World Map.  Jonesboro Right Now
  • The Arkansas Department of Transportation has awarded $456,000 in grants to three public colleges, including one in Northeast Arkansas, to boost transportation workforce training in heavy equipment operations and diesel technology.   • Prosecuting Attorney Sonia Hagood announced Thursday that she will seek re-election for the 2nd Judicial District, which covers Clay, Craighead, Crittenden, Greene, Mississippi, and Poinsett counties—she began serving in January and said she will continue protecting communities and supporting victims.  K8 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer's Association Arkansas Chapter will hold the 2025 Northeast Arkansas Walk to End Alzheimer's on October 18 at Arkansas State University, where participants will gather at 9 a.m. to start a nearly two-mile walk and join the Promise Garden Ceremony at 10 a.m. at *101 N. Caraway Road* as part of a statewide drive nearing its $65,000 goal.  Jonesboro Right Now
  • St. Bernards Healthcare has added neurosurgeon Dr. Maheen Khan to its brain and spine team—she brings expertise in removing complex skull and spine tumors and has relocated to Jonesboro after working at Saint Louis University. Her skills and minimally invasive techniques will help expand advanced care, with hand surgeon Dr. Safder Hasan set to join later this year.  Northeast Arkansas News
  • NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital said it and UnitedHealthcare could not agree on a new deal, so starting November 15, patients with employer-sponsored and Medicare Advantage plans will face higher costs for nonemergency services+patients with other plans will not be affected. The hospital urged patients to call UnitedHealthcare during open enrollment from October 15 to December 7.  NEA Report
