  • The Jonesboro Salvation Army is opening an overnight warming shelter at its chapel on South Fisher Street for the next two nights — the door opens at 4 p.m. with a hot meal served at 5 p.m. in the building across the street.  Northeast Arkansas News
  • Local residents can ring in the New Year on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 9 p.m. at the Eagles lodge + 1700 South Caraway with dinner starting at 7 p.m. and music from the cover band Rewind Back to the 80s; advance ticket purchase is recommended.  Northeast Arkansas News
  • Fisher Street Community in Action is hosting a drive-thru Christmas toy giveaway on Monday, Dec. 22 at 315 N. Allis St. from 4 to 7 p.m.; donations for new or gently used toys will be accepted until Dec. 18.  Jonesboro Right Now

  • Jonesboro’s Ozzy Neil Rose, known as 'The Dancing Man', spreads cheer by dancing on sidewalks and sharing his turnaround from depression and substance abuse. The 58 year old veteran entertains locals on social media every evening & supports community events.  Jonesboro Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Robin Myers, former ASU-Mountain Home chancellor (previously interim leader in 2024), was named interim president of the ASU System after Brendan Kelly resigned to lead Eastern Michigan University; Kelly will assist with the transition through Dec. 31 as Myers continues consulting at the CREST Center in Jonesboro.  Delta Digital News Service
  • Westside art teachers turned second-grade drawings into three-dimensional ceramic figures, which were revealed on Oct. 30 at Westside Elementary. The project united students from second to seventh grade and showcased creative collaboration within the district.  NEA Report
  • On Saturday, Arkansas State University held its fall commencement and awarded degrees to 2,335 graduates—details were confirmed by the provost and executive vice chancellor. The new alumni now look forward to contributing to their communities.  Jonesboro Sun

  • JET will soon install 45 new bus shelters with hammered blue paint, digital message boards, and wide roofs at 38 stops; riders will be temporarily picked up 20 feet past construction zones while the project unfolds.  Jonesboro Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Arkansas Department of Health reported 486 whooping cough cases in 2025, the highest since 2013, as falling vaccination rates raise concerns. Recent data shows fewer than 31 cases from Nov. 3 to Dec. 2, and increased vaccinations may be helping slow the surge.  K8 News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • JRN has partnered with local animal shelters to launch Pets of the Week, featuring adoptable pets such as Dusty, a nearly 4-year-old mix who completed her heartworm treatment, and Rory, a 6-month-old playful cat in the shelter.
